On March 11, 2026, Great Bay NERR hosted a virtual workshop on Strategies for Facilitating Marsh Migration Workshop. A summary report and recordings of workshop presentations are now available to share lessons learned from the emerging field and inform local and regional restoration efforts.
Over the last few years, the Great Bay NERR has worked with partners to develop a standardized method for monitoring marsh migration in New Hampshire. The mechanisms of salt marsh migration are not well studied in New England and implementing a monitoring program provides a platform for advancing the collective knowledge about drowning and migrating marshes, and how to best manage these rare coastal habitats in our state.
We are excited to announce the launch of the Caring for Our Marshes Guide, an online resource for coastal residents, landscapers and community leaders looking to protect tidal marshes and strengthen the resilience of homes and neighborhoods. It offers practical, science-based tips for managing shoreline properties so that, as sea levels rise, the landscape can adapt and continue to safeguard both people and nature.
We are pleased to announce the completion of the Meadow Pond Workshop Summary, which summarizes the results of a field-oriented, forward-looking workshop about the Meadow Pond area of Hampton, New Hampshire.
A good knowledge of elevation is critical to designing salt marsh restoration projects that include techniques such as runneling and restoration of tidal flow. It is also essential to designing projects that aim to adapt to erosion or sea level rise such as living shorelines or facilitating marsh migration by using techniques such as lowering the elevation of the adjacent upland or increasing tidal flow into the terrestrial border.
We’re excited to share that the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GBNERR) has wrapped up the Pathways to Salt Marsh Resilience Project. This initiative focused on identifying and advancing efforts across coastal New Hampshire that will help protect the natural pathways salt marshes need to migrate as sea levels rise.
